The Tiny World of Terrariums
We’re not the first place most people think about for Father’s Day shopping because we don’t really do the normal Father type stuff.  And if Dad’s not into crystals, incense, personal development or dragons and skulls, we might not be your go-to place for Father’s Day. However, if Dad has green fingers we might have the perfect gift. For two Dads anyway. LOL
I’ve been following Ben Newell, who creates wonderful terrariums, on TikTok since last year. He recently published the book Hello Tiny World, which is an amazing guide into creating and caring for your own terrariums. I ordered a couple of copies, one for me and one for the shop because I was sure there would be others interested in it, but the one for the shop went to Viv’s house. Then I ordered another three copies and one of those went to Irah’s house, but two have actually made it into the shop this time. :)
Viv, Irah and I, are getting geared up with tools and substrates (never even knew that word existed) to create our own tiny world in a terrarium, and if you think your Dad (or you) might be into that, this book might be just the ticket.  Here’s some information from Ben’s book…
"Venture into the tiny worlds of terrariums and discover how to create a universe of your own.  Like an artist, you’ll learn how to use planting and hardscaping to make stunning terrarium compositions. Plus, master the fundamentals of successful growing – soil, water, and light – so your plants thrive.
Put theory into practice with step-by-step projects of 13 terrariums:
- Repurpose a spice jar to create a stunning yet small terrarium on a budget
- Replicate natural environments in your home with planting and hardscaping choices, such as the fallen branch terrarium
- Express yourself by including playful figurines to create fun imaginary worlds
- Try a bioactive terrarium, adding custodians to thrive in these mini ecosystems
With a combination of projects and deep dives into plant groups and care advice, you’ll be well on your way to curating your own terrarium wonderland with Hello Tiny World."

I had a busy afternoon on Sunday. If you saw my last post on the mosses and terrarium jars, I said I was going to start with the large jar. Well it unfolded a little differently.
So, why did I end up creating all six at once?
I have a perfectly good explanation...
* When I mixed up the substrate, I made far too much, and Ben Newell recommends that you make it up as you need it, as some components like moisture, and some don't, so storing it made up can get a little tricky. (apparently)
* As you might have noticed in the last post, I got a bit carried away with the buying of the moss, and I was concerned that I might neglect it, so it just seemed smart to use it all up, at once. :)
* Once I started, I couldn't stop...  :)
So here's what I created, and now need to learn to look after, quickly, so I don't kill them.
Light is very important, and I don't have enough surfaces that get the right kind of light, so yesterday I ordered a grow light. That was a bit of a challenge as it needs to be 'pretty' to fit into the aesthetics of our home. :)
Have I mentioned that I'm married to a very patient man, who, if left to his own devices would live in a minimalist home. Georgia nicknamed him Poor Peter about five minutes after she joined the Inspire Me team. She has always been able to read me like a book. :)
So here are my babies..
