The Owl as a Messenger
One morning a few months ago, Peter who had just dropped me off at the shop, called me and described his arrival back home…
He pulled into our garage and was about to get out of the car when he saw a little head pop up from the rear of the space. Big eyes stared back at him, and it took a few seconds for his mind to grasp that he was seeing a little owl/morepork/ruru. It then flew over the car and away…
I felt such excitement that he got to see this wonderful bird, but I must admit I also felt a pang of disappointment that I didn’t get to share this amazing experience.
There had been a storm overnight, and my rational brain told me it must have been blown off course, finding a safe haven for the night in our garage. We've lived in this very populated area for 20 years and we’ve never seen or heard a morepork before, so I immediately began thinking about what seeing an owl, whether in actuality or vicariously (for me through Peter) might mean for us…
As I looked for guidance on what it means to see an owl, I discovered that the owl has deep meaning for a variety of cultures, with a common thread of…
* inner wisdom
* wealth
* change
* transformation
* intuitive development
* self-actualisation
* prosperity
* good luck and fortune
Universally, the owl seems to be seen as a messenger, and different cultures also ascribe other meanings to sightings of them.
Author Dr Steven Farmer says that when an animal shows up in ordinary reality, in an uncommon way or at unusual times, such as an owl in the daytime, this is most definitely an omen. He urges us to pay close attention to whatever’s going on in our immediate world and see if we can discern the message the owl is giving us.
Using our imagination and allowing Spirit to communicate through our animal brothers and sisters, opens us to wider avenues of guidance.
