The Celebration of Easter
I asked Irah to create an Easter Altar, and as always, she has done a beautiful job.
Easter is a Christian religious holiday, also known as a feast day, that celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb, three days after his crucifixion...
The Old Testament prophesied this event hundreds of times, hundreds to thousands of years prior to the Resurrection. When it actually happened, it was obviously a huge deal, and continues to be the most important and oldest festival of the Christian Church.
For many Christians, Easter is also a time to reflect on the meaning of life and the power of love and forgiveness. Through the symbolism of Easter, Christians are reminded that no matter how dark things may seem, there is always hope in the power of resurrection and new beginnings.
While Easter occurs on different dates in March or April of each year, it always falls on the Sunday of Passion Week aka Holy Week. This week provides the opportunity for reflection upon the shift in humanity Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross launched.
In addition to its religious significance, Easter has also become associated with various secular traditions and customs. These include the Easter Bunny, egg decorating, egg hunts, and the giving of Easter baskets. These traditions are often observed by people of various religious and cultural backgrounds, making Easter a widely celebrated and recognised holiday in many parts of the world.
As a child, I grew up in a household where religion wasn’t a part of family life or conversation, that I can remember. My older sister went to Bible School, and I went to Sunday School for a while, but I don’t remember us celebrating the religious side of Easter. It was more about the Easter Bunny and chocolate Easter Eggs, until I got to my early teens, and my parents started giving me beautiful china teacups and saucers for Easter, some of which I still have, 50 plus years on…
I hope you enjoy celebrating Easter, in whatever way you choose, and for me this year I will be reflecting on the power of love and forgiveness, and remembering that no matter how dark things may seem at times, there is always hope…
