Labradorite Oval Bead - A Flicker of Hidden Fire

There's a moment, turning a piece of labradorite in the light, when it seems to hold its breath — flat and quiet one second, then alive with colour the next. This little oval bead carries that same quiet magic in miniature, its smooth curved surface catching flashes of blue and gold as it moves. Long before it had a scientific name, labradorite was said by the Inuit to be the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis, caught and held inside stone. Even in this small, tactile form, that sense of something hidden just beneath the surface remains fully intact.

There's something special about setting a stone like this into something you make yourself — a bead small enough to become part of a bracelet, a pendant, or a pair of earrings, while still carrying all of labradorite's shifting depth. Labradorite has long been connected to inner knowing and the courage to trust what you sense rather than only what you can see, and that quality feels fitting for a piece designed to be shaped, strung, and worn close. This bead suits anyone drawn to subtle transformation, considered design, or the simple pleasure of watching light do something unexpected.

Some of the Healing & Metaphysical Properties

Labradorite is traditionally associated with the following properties:

  • Intuition and insight: Supports a stronger connection to inner knowing and encourages trust in one's own perception and instincts.
  • Transformation support: Associated with helping to navigate change, transition, and personal growth with greater resilience and clarity.
  • Protective energy: Traditionally regarded as a stone of protection, believed to create a stabilising energetic boundary during emotionally demanding periods.
  • Creative thinking: Said to stimulate imagination, inspiration, and a more expansive approach to ideas and problem-solving.
  • Inner strength: Associated with supporting confidence and perseverance, particularly during times of uncertainty or self-doubt.
  • Emotional balance: Believed to help temper overactive thoughts and emotions, encouraging a calmer, more grounded inner state.
  • Grief and transition: Labradorite is traditionally associated with supporting those moving through grief or profound loss — offering a sense of protective presence and gentle encouragement toward eventual transformation and renewal.
  • Chakras and zodiac: Most strongly linked to the Third Eye and Crown chakras, extending to the Throat chakra, and traditionally associated with Scorpio, Sagittarius, Leo, and Pisces.

How You Can Use Your Beads

  • Design a focal piece: Use your bead as the centrepiece of a necklace or bracelet, letting its shifting colour take centre stage.
  • Wire wrap into a pendant: Wire wrap your bead to turn it into a one-of-a-kind pendant or drop earring.
  • Pair with complementary stones: Combine your bead with quartz, moonstone, or metal spacers to build a balanced, personalised design.
  • Set into jewellery findings: Use a glue-on bail or prong setting to incorporate your bead into rings, brooches, or hair pieces.
  • Build a matching set: Order several beads together to create symmetrical earrings or a coordinated jewellery set.
  • Gift to a jewellery maker: A labradorite oval bead makes a lovely gift for anyone who loves designing their own pieces.

Appearance & Specs

This oval bead is cut and polished from natural labradorite, a member of the feldspar mineral family. Its base tone sits in the dark grey to charcoal range, offset by flashes of labradorescence — shifting blue, green, and gold light that appears and disappears as the bead moves. The surface is smooth and rounded, with a gentle curve on both faces.

  • What you'll receive: Each piece is naturally unique and may vary slightly in tone, flash colour, and surface pattern, but will be similar in overall quality and appearance.
  • Dimensions: 2 x 1.5 x 0.7cm (H x W x D) All weights and measurements are approximate.
  • Colour: Base tones range from dark grey to charcoal, with flashes of blue, green, and gold visible at certain angles.
  • Treatment: Labradorite is a naturally occurring stone, though some pieces may have light surface finishing applied to enhance shine — this can't always be confirmed at the individual-piece level.
  • Care: Wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals, perfumes, and prolonged water exposure. Cleanse with moonlight, smoke, or sound.

Things You Might Want to Know

  • Will my bead look exactly like the photos? This is an assorted listing, so your piece will be similar in quality and appearance but not identical to the one shown.
  • Why does the colour shift and move? This effect, called labradorescence, is caused by light refracting between microscopic internal layers within the stone, so different colours appear as the angle changes.
  • Some angles show no colour at all — is that normal? Yes, this is a natural part of labradorescence rather than a flaw, and the flash will reappear as you turn the bead in the light.

Dispatch and delivery days are Monday to Friday.

Please be aware that some isolated regions may require additional delivery time. If this is the case for your area we will notify you of this prior to processing your order. We cannot deliver to Post Office Boxes or Private Boxes. We do not deliver outside New Zealand, however orders may still be placed from overseas with a New Zealand delivery address.

OUT OF STOCK ITEMS

We're a small business, and while we do our best to ensure that our stock levels are correct, we sometimes find that the system says we have more of something than we actually do.
