Otodus Obliquus Fossilised Shark Tooth — A Relic of Ancient Seas

Approximately 40 to 56 million years ago, a creature moved through warm, shallow seas that no longer exist — a shark so powerful and so perfectly formed that its lineage would eventually give rise to the largest predatory fish the world has ever known. The Otodus obliquus fossilised shark tooth is a direct relic of that ancient world, preserved in the marine sediments of Morocco and surfacing millions of years later as one of the most immediately striking natural specimens available in the fossil market. To hold one is to hold something genuinely extraordinary — a tooth that was functional, fearsome, and real, long before humans existed to marvel at it.

These Otodus obliquus fossilised shark teeth carry a presence that is difficult to describe but easy to feel. There is a raw, grounding energy to a fossil tooth — something ancient and protective that has appealed to collectors, healers, and curious minds alike across cultures and centuries. In the crystal and fossil community, fossilised shark teeth are widely associated with strength, courage, and the wisdom of deep time — a natural talisman for those who value resilience, focused energy, and a deeper connection to the extraordinary patience of the natural world.

Some of the Healing & Metaphysical Properties

Otodus obliquus fossilised shark tooth is traditionally associated with the following properties:

  • Ancient strength: Carries the powerful, primal energy of one of the ocean's most formidable ancient predators, believed to support a strong sense of personal courage and inner resilience.
  • Protection: Fossilised shark teeth have been carried as protective talismans across cultures for thousands of years, believed to create a grounding, shielding energetic presence around the person who holds or wears one.
  • Transformation and growth: Traditionally associated with supporting personal evolution and the courage to move through periods of significant change with clarity and determination.
  • Grounding energy: Carries a deep, stabilising connection to the earth and to geological time, supporting a settled, centred feeling in both body and mind.
  • Focus and determination: Associated with the sharp, directed energy of a natural predator — supporting clear thinking, purposeful action, and the mental focus needed to pursue meaningful goals.
  • Connection to ancient wisdom: Many in the crystal and fossil community feel that ancient fossils carry an accumulated energy of deep time, supporting perspective, patience, and a broader view of life's challenges.

Appearance & Structure

Dimensions: 3-3.4 x 2.3-2.9 x 0.7-1cm (H x W x D) All weights and measurements are approximate.

Otodus obliquus was a large predatory shark of the Eocene epoch, living approximately 40 to 56 million years ago in warm, shallow seas across what is now North Africa, Europe, and beyond. The majority of commercially available Otodus obliquus teeth are sourced from Morocco, where they are found in Eocene-era marine deposits and are among the most well-preserved shark fossils available in the world market.

The tooth has a broad, triangular crown with smooth, unserrated cutting edges — a defining characteristic of Otodus obliquus that distinguishes it from later shark species in the Megalodon lineage. The prominent lateral denticles — small secondary cusps at the base of the crown on either side — are another immediately recognisable feature of this species, and their presence and condition vary naturally between individual specimens. The colouring ranges from warm cream and pale ivory through to soft grey and light tan, with the chalky white root matrix providing a natural contrast against the smoother enamel of the crown. Natural variation in colour, preservation quality, root condition, and overall form between pieces is entirely normal and part of what makes each specimen genuinely individual.

How You Can Use Your Fossilised Shark Tooth

  • Display specimen: Arrange your Otodus obliquus tooth on a shelf, desk, or natural display as a striking focal point that brings ancient, grounding energy into your everyday environment.
  • Protective talisman: Keep your fossil tooth in your pocket, bag, or on your person as a natural talisman of strength, courage, and protective energy.
  • Meditation anchor: Hold your tooth during meditation to support a deeper sense of grounding, resilience, and connection to the ancient rhythms of the natural world.
  • Crystal pairing: Pair with grounding stones such as black tourmaline, shungite, or ammonite fossils to create a powerful display of ancient, protective, earth-connected energy.
  • Intention space: Incorporate your fossil tooth into an altar, crystal grid, or mindful corner of your home as an anchor of strength, transformation, and deep time energy.
  • Gift giving: A fossilised shark tooth makes a genuinely unique and memorable gift — visually striking, naturally fascinating, and carrying a story that spans tens of millions of years.

Chakra Associations

  • Root Chakra: Strongly connected to the Root Chakra, the fossilised shark tooth supports deep grounding, physical stability, and a settled, embodied sense of safety and presence.
  • Solar Plexus Chakra: Associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra, supporting personal power, courage, and the focused, determined energy needed to move through challenges with clarity and confidence.

Zodiac Associations

  • Scorpio: Resonates deeply with Scorpio's intensity, depth, and natural affinity for transformation — the fossilised shark tooth supports resilience and the courage to move through profound change.
  • Aries: A natural pairing for Aries' bold, pioneering energy — the ancient strength and protective quality of the tooth amplifies Aries' natural courage and drive to initiate and lead.
  • Capricorn: Supports Capricorn's patient, determined approach to long-term goals with a steady, grounding, and protective energetic presence rooted in deep time.

Important Notes

Assorted Crystals

When a product is labelled 'assorted,' the photos shown are examples only. Your piece will be similar in quality and beauty, but not identical. Each piece varies naturally in tone, shimmer, surface texture, and formation — this variation is part of its natural charm.

Dyed, Frosted, Heat Treated or Otherwise Enhanced Stones

Where finishing is applied (e.g., frosting, dyeing or heat treating), it primarily affects appearance; the underlying stone remains the same and is believed to still carry its traditional metaphysical associations.

Care & Cleansing Suggestions

  • Gentle handling: Fossilised shark teeth are natural specimens and can be fragile, particularly around the tip of the crown and the lateral denticles — always handle with care and store on a soft, stable surface.
  • Cleaning: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth only — avoid water, chemical cleaners, and abrasive materials, as these may affect the surface and matrix over time.
  • Display: Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight and damp environments to preserve the natural surface and matrix detail over time.
  • Moonlight cleansing: Place your fossil tooth under the light of the moon overnight to cleanse and refresh its energy.
  • Smoke cleansing: Gently pass smoke from incense or herbs over your tooth to clear its energy.
  • Sound cleansing: Place near a singing bowl or within the resonance of bells or chimes to cleanse energetically through sound vibration.
