Dream Sisters – A Heartwarming Coming of Age Time-Travel Story

By: Justine Pickering (Author)

About the Book

In 2019 New Zealand, Anita is a teenager yearning for the happier life of her childhood. In 1829, an unforeseeable accident damaged Nita's lightship, leaving her stranded in the past. The girls have never met, but they share a connection that will bridge their minds across time. Dream Sisters is a time-slip, time-travelling story about the importance of family and friends, celebrating what can be created in life when the limits we put on ourselves are cast aside. Justine wrote early versions of this story back in the 1990s, and it evolved over decades — with characters like Jason the cat and Marama arriving unbidden and refusing to leave — before finally coming together during lockdown in 2020, when Anita, Nita, and Rangimaire's story was finally ready to be told.

Themes & Setting

  • A time-slip story woven between 2019 and 1829 New Zealand
  • Set among real Whanganui locations — Moutoa Island, Aberfeldy School, and the Citadel Café in Castlecliff
  • Themes of family, friendship, grief, courage, and believing in yourself
  • Science woven throughout, drawn from real research and grounded in genuine scientific detail

Who It's For

Ideal for readers of all ages who enjoy time-travel and coming-of-age fiction, fans of New Zealand-set stories, and young people (or anyone) curious about science, self-belief, and what's possible when you stop limiting your own dreams.
